The right digger comes down to access width and dig depth.

800kg (Kobelco) — access from 680mm. Backyard jobs, indoor work, tight gates. Digs to 1.5m.

1–1.2 tonne (Takeuchi) — access from 750mm. Small residential, landscaping, shallow trenching. Digs to 1.75m.

1.7 tonne (Yanmar / Kubota) — access from 950–990mm. The standard residential digger: drainage, retaining prep, landscaping. Digs to 2.2–2.3m.

If you are planning a major construction project, such as building a house, you will need to clear the land. This is commonly done with mini diggers. But what else can these machines be used for?

Mini excavators are small versions of normal excavators that are used in construction work, for landscaping, and for other small-scale jobs when you don’t need a large machine. They have four-wheel drive and can cater to a wide range of jobs around your property. Depending on your needs, mini diggers can be hired or bought. And if you need to move them around, they have tracks instead of tyres—so no punctures!

With their small size, they can go places that bigger machines can’t, so they’re often used in tight areas where larger machines would get stuck. Because they’re compact, they’re also good at digging close to buildings or walls without damaging them. They’re popular with landscape gardeners who use them to dig features such as ponds and waterfalls. They are also handy when you want to move heavy items like boulders or when you need to lift things up-simply attach a lifting arm.

We've been hiring mini diggers across Auckland for over seven years, from 800kg micro diggers up to 2.5-tonne machines. Every digger comes on a trailer ready to tow, with attachments like rock breakers and augers available. New gear comes into the fleet regularly. If the machine you need isn't listed, get in touch and we'll sort it.
You do not need a licence to use a mini digger on residential or private worksites. If you intend or need to drive the digger on the road a driving licence will be required. If you intend to use it within a building site, you may be asked for proof of training or a certificate of competence.

Mini diggers tend to be easier to maneuver, especially around other objects and vehicles. Mini diggers can also move through crowded lots with ease. Because of their lighter weight, mini diggers are easy to load into trailers and transport to and from the job site.

The Yanmar VIO25 is the largest mini digger in our fleet that still transports on a trailer. A 2.95m digging depth and zero tail swing make it suited to larger residential jobs and deeper trenching.
